Gilbert is the most populated incorporated town in the United States. Gilbert went from a population in 1980 of 5,717 increasing to a population of 229,972 as of 2013. In July of 1920, Gilbert was mainly a farming community powered by the rail line and construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals. Gilbert continued to be an agricultural town from 1911 until the late 1920s and that is why it was once known as the Hay Shipping Capital of the world.
