Peoria was originally based on farming. It has since developed service and commercial industries. In 1954 Peoria was incorporated after being originally settled by farm families who came from Peoria, Illinois, hence the name.
Peoria is currently the largest city in Arizona for land and the ninth largest city for population. In July 2008 Peoria was listed as the top 100 places to live by Money Magazine. Peoria is also the home of the Peoria Sports Complex and were spring training is held. The San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners share this complex. There are several places to visit in historic Peoria such as the 1889 Peoria Town Well (now known as the Osuna Park), Peoria Central Schools, the Jail House, and Presbyterian Church along with many more locations.
Peoria is located northwest of the City of Phoenix and considered a part of the greater area of Phoenix.
